Women's Football: Houghton wants big crowd against Bosnia

ENGLAND will take on Bosnia in their first home fixture since reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup, it was announced yesterday.

The Euro 2017 qualifier takes place at Bristol Academy’s new Ashton Gate Stadium on November 29 and will be the first time fans will be able to see the national side on home turf.

The Lionesses captured the hearts of millions on their remarkable run in Canada which saw them inches away from reaching the final and defeating Germany in the third-placed play-off and captain Steph Houghton is hoping that supporters show up to cheer the side on.

“The team can’t wait to play in England once again in front of our home fans,” she said.

“The support we received from home during the World Cup was amazing and really helped push us on and perform how we did.

“We want to continue building the momentum throughout the Euro qualifying campaign and hope that as many fans as possible come out to support us.”

Chief executive of Bristol Sport Andrew Billingham was delighted that the Football Association had chosen Ashton Gate as the venue for England’s first home game and couldn’t wait to have Mark Sampson return to the club he used to manage.

He said: “We are thrilled that The FA has chosen the new Ashton Gate Stadium to host England Women’s first home match since the World Cup.

“It really builds on our vision of putting Bristol on the map as a top sporting city attracting first-class events.

“Hosting the national team will be an honour and builds on our support of women’s football.

“Last year, Bristol Academy played their Uefa Women’s Champions League games here, notably their memorable win against Barcelona.

“I look forward to welcoming Mark Sampson back to Bristol with his team this November.”
