UNISON is set for its closest leadership election since its creation after head of local government Heather Wakefield announced yesterday she will challenge current general secretary Dave Prentis.
Since his promotion from deputy general secretary in 2001, Mr Prentis has twice been re-elected with large majorities.
He is expected to seek a fourth term in this year’s election when nominations open on August 11.
But Ms Wakefield leads the union’s largest section with over 600,000 members and can count on significant support.
During a 26-year career in the union, she has worked her way up to her current position as a national officer from research and regional organiser roles.
Announcing her intention to stand, she said: “It’s time for real change in our great union.
“Unison needs a powerful voice to speak up for our members and for public services in this time of devastating and unnecessary austerity. I will be that voice.”
Ms Wakefield was scheduled to speak on behalf of Unison at Wednesday evening’s Institute of Employment Rights, but was replaced by Mr Prentis on the night.
Candidates can receive supporting nominations from September 2 and voting will take place between November 9 and December 4.
The result will be announced on December and the winner will begin a five-year term on January 1.
To be accepted, candidates must be nominated by the national executive council, by at least two sections, at least two regions or 25 local branches.
