IT’S the fifth and final day of Glorious Goodwood with the betting highlights being the Steward’s Cup at 3.45 and the consolation kicking off the card at 2.00. I make Seeking Magic in the latter the best bet of the day.
The seven-year-old has run well in several of these six-furlong events at the West Sussex track, most recently in last year’s main event when finishing 10th of the 24 runners off a rating of 101.
On that occasion Adam Kirby may have pressed the button a bit too early, hitting the front at the quarter-mile pole before weakening inside the final furlong.
He has since slipped to a rating of just 91 and showed last time out at Windsor when, running the smart Huntsmans Close to just over two lengths, that his turn is close at hand.
Of his rivals, former winner of the Stewards itself, Rex Imperator, along with the progressive pair Jan Van Hoof and Direct Times are all respected but I think that Seeking Magic has one more big pay day in him.
The big one looks wide open this year and although I have had a nice each-way wager on Ninjago at a hefty 50/1 I fancy that Greeb may just get the better of him at the weights.
The Charlie Hills runner bounced back to form off 93 in a small field last time out but is sure to be better suited by the hurly burly of this event.
He looks the value at around 20/1 ahead of stable-mate and likely favourite the three-year-old Magical Memory, and the consistent Ruwaiyan, fourth in the 2014 renewal.
In between these big six furlong handicaps the Nassau Stakes at 3.10 should go to the 1,000 Guineas winner Legatissimo, while I shall be having a lumpy each-way bet on the George Baker-trained I’m Fraam Govan in the concluding nine-furlong handicap at 6.00.
Away from the main meeting of the afternoon, Speculative Bid can put behind him his Ascot farce by giving weight away all-around in the 4.35 at Newmarket.
I am also happy to give the talented but quirky Supplicant one more chance in the six-furlong handicap which ends the card at 5.45. Down to a mark of 87 it is surely only a matter of time before he enters the winner’s enclosure.
Of the evening cards, the best bets could come courtesy of Only Just (Hamilton 7.45) and Fever Few in the Lingfield 6.30.
