THE Premier League season curtain-raiser pits Chelsea against Arsenal tomorrow in the Community Shield at Wembley.
Both teams will want to get early bragging rights and pick up the first piece of silverware of the season.
Arsenal head into the match having signed Theo Walcott and Santi Carzola on new long-term deals which will please Gunners fans worried that Walcott would be moved on if he didn’t put pen to paper soon.
Confidence is high among Arsene Wenger’s men with the arrival of former Blue Petr Cech and victory would be a huge signal of intent from the north London club.
However, Wenger is yet to beat Jose Mourinho in 13 attempts and the Special One has a knack of getting under the Frenchman’s skin with ease.
The war of words began at the start of the week when Mourinho that Arsenal have spent more money than people believe, which had Wenger replying that his club spend only when needed and prefer promoting youth — something Chelsea have failed to do successfully since captain John Terry emerged over a decade ago.
The Premier League champions have a full squad to pick from after Diego Costa successfully recovered from a slight hamstring injury which saw him pulled off during the club’s final friendly in the United States against Barcelona.
Falcao is also in contention of making his competitive debut following his arrival from Monaco on loan during the summer.
As for the FA Cup holders, Wenger is still missing Danny Welbeck, who is set to miss the start of the season with an ongoing knee injury, while Alexis Sanchez will not feature after his exploits in Chile’s Copa America victory saw him miss the pre-season tour of Singapore and the former Barcelona forward returns to training on Monday.
Cech is likely to make his competitive debut.
