2,000 turn out for festival of labour

MORE than 2,000 people gathered at Wortley Hall near Sheffield — known as the workers’ stately home — for the annual South Yorkshire Festival on Saturday.

Wortley Hall was built as a mansion for aristocrats on the blood and sweat of Yorkshire miners, but is now owned by the labour movement.

Visitors on Saturday were treated to political speeches and displays, as well as an array of stalls representing trade unions, political and community organisations and crafts and family entertainment.

The Morning Star was well received with all available copies sold.

South Yorkshire Supporters Group stall raised £350 for the paper’s fighting fund and a radical history walk around Sheffield raised yet more money for the paper.
