Rugby League: Championship sides overwhelmed

It was a tough round for sides from The Championship, as the Qualifiers section of the Super 8s moved on to game two, writes James Nalton.

Bradford were overwhelmed by Super League’s bottom side Wakefield on Saturday, as the Wildcats scored five tries without reply in the opening half an hour. The Bulls saved some face with a few scores of their own, and were able to limit the damage in the second half, but the final score of 48-18 reflects Wakefield’s dominance.

It was an ominous sign for the other Championship sides, who all struggled against Super League opposition in their respective games on Sunday.

Leigh lost to Salford by 46 points to 18, and it was a similar story in Widnes as the home side defeated Sheffield Eagles 48-12 thanks to a Stefan Marsh hat-trick.

Josh Mantellato continued his impressive season for Hull KR by scoring a hat-trick of his own as his side beat Halifax by 34 points to 12 in the final game of the round.
