Orkneys get first all-female ballot paper

ORCADIAN voters were given an all-female choice of candidates in a local by-election won by the Orkney Manifesto Group (OMG) yesterday.

Orkney Islands Council said the West Mainland ward by-election was the first case of a women-only list on a ballot paper in the Scottish islands and possibly in the whole country.

It followed the death of an OMG councillor.

Rachael King held the seat for the group with more than 51 per cent of first-preference votes.

The full results were OMG 593 votes, independent candidate 446 and the Scottish Greens 115. Turnout was 34 per cent.

The council is controlled by independents.
