SOUTH AFRICAN miners condemned the latest announcement of job losses in the crisis-hit platinum sector yesterday.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) criticised mine owner Glencore’s decision to close its Eland platinum mine near Brits in the North West Province.
Anglo-Swiss Glencore, the world’s biggest mining corporation, also owns the infamous Marikana platinum mine in the province.
NUM deputy general secretary William Mabapa said the union “echoes the sentiments by President Jacob Zuma that mining companies must halt the retrenchments and give us the opportunity to engage and come up with alternatives.”
The NUM said it also supported moves by Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi to stop job losses in the mining industry, saying it was disappointing that firms were not following the government’s lead.
In Mpumalanga province, striking NUM members signed an inflation-busting three-year wage deal with management at the Nkomati nickel mine.
