We Lost Our Way
F. O'Leary
By speaking in a language they don’t understand
– faction-baggage, or sick-making-myth –
year in, year out,
we were letting young people down.
Fracturing, division,
a widening gap,
we got it wrong
in every corner of our country.
From Southampton to Nuneaton,
the South, to the North,
we lost
touch with our people.
Now we know we need to change
the world, change lives,
reconnect, swallow
fire, faith, hope and all those hard truths. Today
we are in danger,
a Westminster elite
asking for it:
for your support.
Note: We Lost Our Way is a found poem, made up of words and phrases spliced together and rearranged from the statements made by leadership and deputy leadership hopefuls included in the Labour Party Candidates’ Booklet issued to members and supporters.
F. O'Leary lives, works and writes in London and is a member of the Labour Party. She recently attended the Faber Academy and on the 2nd of November she, and other recent graduates, are set to read at Coffee-House Poetry at the Troubadour.
