Corruption scandal forces Perez to resign presidency

EMBATTLED Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina quit yesterday over the corruption scandal rocking his government.

His spokesman Jorge Ortega said Mr Perez submitted his resignation at midnight on Wednesday local time after a judge ordered him to appear in court over the “La Linea” customs fraud case.

Mr Perez’s resignation, the first by a Guatemalan president, is not effective until congress accepts it and names a replacement. MPs were to convene yesterday to do so.

The scandal over millions of pounds worth of bribes paid to dodge import duties has already led to the jailing of former vice-president Roxana Baldetti on May 8 and the resignation of several ministers.

New Vice-President Alejandro Maldonado is next in line to assume the presidency.

If he does so, he would remain in office until the winner of Sunday’s election is inaugurated on January 14.
