Trade union group MPs choose gender-balanced leadership

LABOUR’S trade union group of MPs has elected its first gender-balanced committee in its history, writes Luke James.

At the annual general meeting of the group on Tuesday, 13 women and 13 men were elected to represent the 11 Labour-affiliated unions.

The group’s leadership is also gender-balanced.

Miners’ MP Ian Lavery continues as chair, while Jo Stevens — one of eight new MPs on the group — was elected as secretary.

Former Unison official Dave Anderson and Unite’s former head of health Rachel Maskell are the two deputy chairs.

Mr Lavery told the Star: “As a group we are united against the Tory agenda of demonising working people and attacking their fundamental trade union rights.

“This is more critical than ever due to the passage of the Trade Union Bill through Parliament — and the group will not waiver in its opposition to this.”
