SOUTH Africa said yesterday that it was monitoring a number of people over reported threats to US interests, but was satisfied that no-one in the country faced imminent danger.
The US embassy had warned its citizens on Tuesday of a possible attack by “extremists,” but did not identify any individuals or groups.
State Security Minister David Mahlobo said that the US embassy had shared information linked to the warning with his officials.
But he added: “This is not new information. The information has been shared over the past few days. The information has been acted upon.”
“In terms of our own threat analysis, which we had to do, we … came to the conclusion that there was no immediate danger.”
In Washington, State Department spokesman John Kirby said he could not elaborate on what prompted the embassy announcement, simply saying: “The embassy had information indicating a potential terrorist threat.”
