Jaguar fined for death at work

LUXURY-CAR manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover was fined tens of thousands of pounds yesterday for breaches of safety regulations, after an investigation into the death of a worker found the company had failed to carry out risk assessments.

The tragedy took place at Jaguar’s Merseyside plant, when 49-year-old Graham Begley was trapped between two 24-ton pieces of car-making machinery in September 2011.

Jaguar Land Rover was found to have failed in its duty to assess the risks its employees were exposed to when lifting the car-making parts.

However, the court accepted that the breach of regulations had not caused Mr Begley’s death.

Jaguar will be fined £30,000 and must make a further contribution of £20,000 towards the Health and Safety Executive’s legal costs.
