Nationalists and Greens line up with Labour to stop Trade Union Bill

SCOTTISH and Welsh nationalist MPs will unite with Labour today in a bid to block the “draconian” and “Dickensian” Trade Union Bill.

The Green, SNP and Plaid group — now the third largest in Parliament — called for a “progressive alliance” against the Bill at its second reading today.

The SNP has tabled an amendment, while Plaid Cymru has called for a royal commission to examine the challenges facing working people.

SNP MP and Unison member Chris Stephens said that the Bill was the kind of legislation you’d expect to see in the history books.

“It is an ideological attack on civil liberties and is a human rights issue that affects everyone,” he said.

Plaid Cymru MP Jonathan Edwards, whose dad is a retired union shop steward known as John Strike, said the government should be more concerned about “the challenges faces by working people, such as zero-hour contracts, low pay and workplace rights.”
