Wigan Warrior’s 30-24 home win over Hull FC on Thursday saw them go level with Leeds at the top of the Super League Super 8s table.
Hull mounted a comeback in the latter stages as two tries in two minutes from Jack Logan and Jordan Rankin took the score to 26-24 with eight minutes to go.
However, they were unable to take the lead and Warriors winger Joe Burgess sealed the win with a last-minute try.
Despite the win, Wigan coach Shaun Wane was disappointed with his team’s performance against a Hull side missing 12 players due to injury.
“I’m a bit frustrated. I thought they played with the passion their coach used to play with,” said Wane.
“They talked all week about injuries — and they do have injuries — and that makes these difficult mental games. It was always a danger and it was my job to get rid of that. Unfortunately we didn’t do that so I’m to blame.
“I thought for parts of the first half we played well, then switched off for three minutes and it cost us. We were way off for our standards.”
Wigan join Leeds on 39 points at the top of the table as the Rhinos, who still top the table thanks to a superior points difference, fell to a 46-16 defeat against Catalans Dragons in France on Saturday afternoon.
Earlier in the week, Castleford lost at home to St Helens by 38 points to 42.
It was a game in which both sides abandoned their defensive responsibilities, leading to an entertaining spectacle, even if a few purists bemoaned the poor quality of the defending.
The Saints’ win means they increased the gap between themselves and the Tigers to six points, securing a top-four finish with two games to go.
In the rounds other Super League tie, Huddersfield retained third spot in the league with an emphatic 48-10 victory at home to Warrington on Sunday.
Giants winger Jermaine McGillvary stole the show, scoring four of his side’s nine tries.
The haul took him to 25 tries in total for the season, taking him ahead of Wigan’s Joe Burgess at the top of the competition’s try-scoring chart.
The win meant Huddersfield secured their own place in the semi-finals and only the order of the top four now remains undecided.
