Boxer dies after knock-out blow in title fight

AN AUSTRALIAN boxer died yesterday from injuries sustained in a title fight on Friday.

Davey Browne Jnr was knocked out in the final 30 seconds of a 12-round International Boxing Federation super-featherweight regional title fight in Sydney against Carlo Magali of the Philippines.

Despite initially regaining consciousness after the bout, he collapsed from his stool and was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The 28-year-old’s family turned off his life support yesterday, his death coming just six months after Queensland boxer Braydon Smith collapsed and died after he lost a 10-round featherweight bout.

New South Wales minister for sport Stuart Ayres said: “My thoughts are with David’s family and friends during this tragic time.”

Australian National Boxing Federation president John McDougall said that the boxer had “dropped” in front of him.

“The Filipino hit him with a crashing punch and he was out cold before he hit the floor,” McDougall said. “The doctor gave him oxygen and an ambulance was there in seconds.”
