MAJOR Labour Party affiliate GMB will push the party to support leaving the European Union if workers’ rights are weakened.
The general union tabled a motion at the TUC Congress this week calling for Britain to quit the EU if David Cameron is successful in “hawking” British workers’ rights, but withdrew it following pressure for consensus.
But it submitted a motion yesterday to Labour conference, which begins at the end of next week, to push the position.
The move has extra significance because new party leader Jeremy Corbyn has pledged to allow members to decide on policy, suggesting that he will not ignore motions passed by conference in the way his recent predecessors have done.
The motion to Labour conference says the employment rights opt-outs sought by Mr Cameron would make Britons “third-class citizens of the EU.”
Other “contemporary motions” submitted to the Labour conference by the unions are likely to include a call by transport unions to renationalise rail franchises as they expire.
Motions on the Trade Union Bill and public services will also gain the support of affiliated unions, who are permitted four topic choices in a “priorities ballot” taking place on the conference’s first day.
Constituency Labour parties are also permitted four choices — but if delegates from both sections of conference vote for the same topics, as few as four debates could take place.
A Campaign for Labour Party Democracy spokesman urged constituency delegates to choose four topics that would not be prioritised by the unions to ensure the widest possible discussion.
He said activists were hoping for Trident replacement to be debated.
A number of proposed amendments to the party rulebook, submitted by constituency parties, have been ruled out on technical grounds by Labour’s conference arrangements committee.
