Sport in brief: March 18, 2025

HORSE RACING: Athenry-born jockey Danny Gilligan rode four winners with a combined price of 189/1 at Monday’s Down Royal meeting.

All of his mounts were trained by Gordon Elliott who claimed six winners on St Patrick’s Day after also picking up two first places at Wexford.

Elliott’s prize money haul for the season has now climbed to almost £600,000, despite failing to come home with a winner from last week’s Cheltenham Festival.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Hull FC, who knocked out holders Wigan in the last round, have been drawn against neighbours Hull Kingston Rovers in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

Hull KR currently top the Super League with the competition’s only remaining hundred per cent record.

Last year’s runners-up Warrington will face 13-time winners St Helens in the last eight, Wakefield host Leigh and Salford travel to Perpignan to face the Catalans.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Brechin City lead the Highland League by three points ahead of Wednesday evening’s tricky visit to form-team Inverurie Locos, who have won their last seven games, while second-placed Brora Rangers are at lowly Keith.

Tomorrow night’s other games see defending champions Buckie Thistle take on Deveronvale, Fraserburgh up against Turriff, Huntly at struggling Strathspey Thistle and bottom club Rothes play Lossiemouth.

GREYHOUND RACING: Greyhound racing will end in Swindon at the end of this year after it was announced that the town’s Abbey Stadium will close due to declining attendances and increasing costs.

The stadium opened in 1949 for the Swindon Robins speedway team before greyhounds were introduced in November 1952.

There are 19 active greyhound tracks in Great Britain, with plans to ban the sport at Ystrad Mynach in Wales expected next year.
