Golf: Controversy sparks fightback

THE United States made a roaring comeback in the Solheim Cup to turn jaw-dropping controversy into a 14.5-13.5 victory over Europe in Germany.

The visitors were 10-6 down going into the 12 singles after an incident at the end of the fourballs that reduced European Charley Hull and US Alison Lee to tears.

Lee picked up her ball on the 17th green, thinking Hull had conceded an 18-inch putt. Hull’s partner Suzann Pettersen insisted that the continent had not given up and won the point.

Though not breaking any rules, Solheim debutants Hull and Lee both had to be consoled by officials amid claims that Pettersen had breached the game’s moral code.

US captain Juli Inkster even reportedly wanted to rouse a chorus of “Europeans suck,” before they plumped for the catchy “class, style, USA.”
