MEMBER states of the Ecowas West African regional bloc will gather in the Nigerian capital Abuja today to consider a draft plan to resolve the political impasse in Burkina Faso.
Senegalese President Macky Sall, who helped lead talks at the weekend, said that the draft was the result of discussions with all parties.
It provides for new and more inclusive elections in November, although the military forces that seized power in a coup last week indicated on Sunday that they wanted General Gilbert Diendere to lead the country during any transitional period.
That could prove to be a sticking point since the mediators insist on ousted interim president Michel Kafando returning until elections scheduled for no later than November 22.
“We have two ways out here,” said Mr Sall.
“The first one is through peace … that will lead to an end of the crisis through fair and democratic elections,” adding that the other route would lead to chaos.
