Turkey: Kurdish ministers quit the cabinet

TWO ministers from Turkey’s pro-Kurdish People’s Democracy Party (HDP) resigned from the country’s interim government yesterday amid continued fighting between Kurdish rebels and government forces in the south-east.

A statement from the prime minister’s office said that Ali Haydar Konca and Muslum Dogan had resigned from their EU affairs and development briefs but gave no reason for their decisions.

The HDP, which grew out of the Kurdish nationalist movement, won an unusually high share of the vote in last June’s election after broadening its appeal to attract left and liberal votes from across Turkey.

Mr Dogan and Mr Konca were the first two MPs from the party to take ministerial posts.

But relations have soured amid a flare-up of violence between Kurdish rebels and Turkey’s military and the failure of any of the parties to strike a coalition agreement, which has led to elections being called for November 1.
