Burkina Faso: Interim president returns as coup disintegrates

BURKINA Faso’s interim president Michel Kafando announced on TV yesterday his return to office following last week’s abortive coup.

Coup leaders agreed on Tuesday night to return to barracks and said they would restore the deposed leader to power, signing a deal with the army.

The deal was signed after loyal troops entered the capital Ouagadougou, turning up pressure on the elite presidential guard (RSP) which had staged the attempted coup.

Under the peace deal the RSP agreed to stand down from the positions they had taken up in Ouagadougou, while the army agreed to withdraw its troops to 40 miles from the capital and guarantee the safety of RSP members and their families.

Burkina Faso was plunged into crisis last Wednesday when the RSP detained interim leaders who had been running the country since a popular uprising deposed president Blaise Compaore last October.
