Louis van Gaal believes Anthony Martial will remain grounded despite an impressive start to his Manchester United career.
The teenage hotshot came on as a second-half substitute to score his side’s third goal in their 3-0 win over Ipswich in the League Cup third round on Wednesday night, with Wayne Rooney and Andreas Pereira also netting for the Reds.
But Van Gaal insisted that the £36 million summer signing from Monaco wouldn’t get carried away with his current form despite grabbing his fourth goal in as many matches.
He said: “It’s not so difficult because he’s a player who is very modest and he knows that he can score because of his fellow players.
“We made it very easy for him two times because we won the game and then the gaps are existing and with his speed and composure he can score.
“He did it also against Liverpool and now again. So we are happy but still we have to keep our feet on the ground.”
Van Gaal went into the game against the Tractor Boys hoping not to suffer a similar fate to last season when then were knocked out of the cup in the second round following a 4-0 defeat to then League One side MK Dons.
But Rooney settled his side’s nerves midway through the first half, latching on to a delightful ball over the top from Daley Blind and steering past Bartosz Bialkowski in the Ipswich goal.
Brazilian midfielder Pereira scored a spectacular free-kick to double his side’s lead before Martial slotted home a third in injury time.
United will now face a home tie against Middlesbrough in the fourth round of the cup, a team that Van Gaal admits he knows very little about.
“They are a top club in the Championship but I don’t know much about them,” said the Dutchman.
“The scout shall analyse the opponent as always. He did this with Ipswich Town and he shall do this with Middlesbrough also.
“But I am happy with the draw because we are playing at home and we have to travel a lot this year so it’s fantastic that we can stay at home.”
