Anti-arms campaigners call on government to end secrecy over US nuclear weapons in Britain

ANTI-ARMS campaigners have called on the government to end its secrecy over the deployment of US nuclear weapons to Britain.

US National Nuclear Security Administration’s Jill Hruby said last week that the new B61-12 nuclear bombs are “fully forward deployed” — a military term that suggests that bombs are being delivered to Nato bases across Europe.

The satellite-guided bombs have three times the destructive power of the US atomic bomb that killed over 200,000 people in the 1945 Hiroshima attack.

In a letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Defence Secretary John Healey today, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) general secretary Sophie Bolt said that it was “unacceptable” the news did not come from the British government in Parliament.

She wrote: “There has also been no information presented to local communities about the new security risks that they face.

“US nuclear weapons at RAF Lakenheath will present a major threat, not only to communities near the base, but to Britain as a whole, by putting us all on the US/Nato nuclear front line.

“I urge you to make a public statement to clarify the situation at RAF Lakenheath.”

Lakenheath Action for Peace, CND and other groups have been taking monthly actions against US nuclear weapons at the air base in Suffolk, where nuclear facilities have been upgraded since 2021.

The upgrades include nuclear bomb shelters.

The British government holds a “nuclear ambiguity” position by neither confirming nor denying developments.

A vigil will be held outside the main gate of the base from noon tomorrow.

Campaigners are also organising a peace camp, ending in a blockade of the camp, from April 14 to 25.
