GMB call for transparency in courier pay algorithms

THE GMB union today called for transparency in the algorithms behind pay at food delivery and riding companies.

The union, which has deals with delivery giants Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Uber, says clarity is required for sensible negotiations over pay and conditions.

It comes after a coalition including the TUC, Amnesty International and Privacy International launched a campaign on Monday to reveal the process on how pay and job access decisions are made.

GMB national officer Eamon O’Hearn said that algorithmic transparency is a “massive issue across the entire platform economy.”

He said: “How much members are paid is a crucial building block of negotiation between workers and bosses.

“GMB needs to know how and when members are paid if we’re going to be effective in raising their earnings and addressing inequality.

“Our members want greater transparency in how their earnings are calculated, particularly in terms of ‘dynamic pricing,’ as our members seek to keep pace with the rise in cost of living.”
