Bakers take seat on the NEC for first time ever

FOOD workers’ union BFAWU won a seat on Labour’s executive in polls yesterday, taking up the position for the first time.

Pauline McCarthy, who has worked for Premier Foods for 27 years and served on BFAWU’s executive for the past nine, beat Community’s Lauren Crowley in a ballot of trade unionists at the Labour conference.

Unions have 12 places on the ruling committee and smaller bodies usually battle over the final slots.

Train drivers’ union Aslef president Tosh McDonald was unsuccessful in his own challenge for a seat.

“I believe in unions and how we can, by working together, build a better working environment for our members as well as support them back into education,” said Ms McCarthy.
