CAMPAIGNERS blocked the headquarters of a housing association in Cambridge over mould and safety concerns on Tuesday.
Tenants’ union Acorn led the demonstration outside Places for People, the managing body of Radiance House, which it says has been plagued by issues for years.
Acorn represents two residents who have complained about mould, poor ventilation, faulty wiring and fire and safety. It says that some issues had been raised for as long as eight years.
“Their way of addressing the mould was just to paint over it,” said Ash, who requested to be referred to by his first name.
“They know about the fire risks of the building but won’t do anything about it.
“They claim that they will, and even sent an email saying that they will address each apartment, but we’ve seen nothing.
“Some of the people in this building suffer from mental health issues and disabilities.
“They know they’re putting vulnerable people at risk and don’t care.”
Acorn Cambridge said that the protest prompted executives to agree to enter negotiations from next Wednesday.
They are calling for staff to fix ventilation to deal with damp and mould, release fire safety reports, and for Jan and Ash — the residents they represent — to be compensated.
Acorn Cambridge secretary Ben Criger said that Places for People had previously admitted that there were “multiple problems” and pledged to provide regular updates, but U-turned on the commitment in November.
“Meanwhile, Places for People are making huge profits, with their CEO enjoying a £400,000 annual salary,” he said.
“Places for People’s profits are up from £140 million last year to £210m this year.
“We are just asking them to do their jobs, something they have more than enough money to do.”
Places for People was contacted for comment.
