Opposition leaders in Wales say efforts to improve NHS performances are failing

OPPOSITION leaders used today’s opening First Minister’s Questions of 2025 to declare efforts to improve ailing NHS performances were failing Wales.

Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said the targets announced by First Minister Eluned Morgan when she was cabinet secretary for health have all been missed.

“A quarter of patients are currently waiting over eight hours in A&E, hospital waiting lists have topped 800,000, ambulance services are in crisis, and GP surgeries are closing,” Mr ap Iorwerth said.

“As health minister she promised no patient would wait over 12 months for treatment by spring, a promise already broken by the new target of bringing two-year waits down to 8,000 by April.” 

The FM said in November there were 2.1 million calls to GP practices and 1.6 million appointments offered in a population of three million people.

“We have got to keep focused on those people who have been waiting a long time, that’s why we’ve spent £50 million additional funding this financial year.”

Ms Morgan said there would be more money for the NHS if the draft budget is passed.
