Six accused of being part of banned PKK to stand trial in 2026

SIX people accused of being part of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) will stand trial in early 2026.

Turkan Ozcan, 59, Mazlum Sayak, 27, Berfin Kerban, 31, Ali Boyraz, 62, Ercan Akbal, 56, and Agit Karatas, 23, have been charged with being members of the proscribed group, known as the PKK.

The two women and four men appeared at the Old Bailey for a preliminary hearing before Justice Cheema-Grubb today.

The senior judge set a plea hearing for June 13 next year and a provisional 12-week trial at the Old Bailey from January 5 2026.

The defendants were assisted by a translator and spoke only to confirm their identities during the hearing to set a timetable for the case.

They all remain on conditional bail.

The PKK is a separatist group that wants an independent Kurdish state in south-east Turkey and has been banned in Britain since 2001.

It has been fighting against the Turkish state since the early 1980s.
