Scotland: EIS members accept pay deal

Scottish teaching union EIS has voted to accept a new pay deal after a lengthy dispute.

The offer accepted by teachers and lecturers includes a 2.5% pay increase over two years, with 1.5% for 2015-16 and a further 1% for 2016-17.

EIS general secretary Larry Flanagan welcomed the “financial certainty” of the two year agreement, but said that “the pay award itself was disappointing.”

Mr Flanagan said “that a meagre pay increase of 2.5% over two years actually exceeds current government pay policy demonstrates that teachers, in line with other public sector workers, are continuing to pay the price foe an economic crisis that was not of their making.”

He said that the EIS remained committed to pursuing future restorative pay rises to return teachers’ wages in real terms to at least pre global crash levels.

The union, which represents 80% of Scotland’s teachers, had put forward proposals for a 5% pay increase for 2015-16, but voted to accept the deal by 83% to 17%.
