EXPLOITATION has become the norm in parts of Britain’s shipping industry, TUC leader Frances O’Grady said yesterday.
“We need justice and equality for all seafarers working on UK-registered ships, whatever passport they hold,” she told the annual conference of maritime union Nautilus.
She praised the union as a shining example of what “intelligent international trade unionism can achieve” fighting on issues like flags of convenience, piracy, inhumane working hours and cost-cutting.
Nautilus was “a real champion for the jobs, skills and safety of seafarers — wherever they come from,” she said.
Ms O’Grady also urged union members to support the campaign against the government’s Trade Union Bill.
She branded the measures contained within the Bill as “state-sanctioned strike-breaking” that would embitter industrial relations and make it harder to resolve disputes.
