Socialists urge Welsh Labour to prepare a progressive manifesto for next Senedd election

SOCIALISTS used the Welsh Labour Grassroots (WLG) fringe meeting in Llandudno at the weekend to plan a progressive manifesto for the next Senedd election.

Senedd member Mick Antoniw said an expansion of the Welsh Parliament to 96 members, elected under a proportional system, would provide an opportunity to elect new people.

“WLG is very good at developing and bringing forward good people and with automatic voter registration this will bring an extra 400,000 people onto the electoral register,” Mr Antoniw said.

Cardiff Central Senedd member Jenny Rathbone said Labour needed to make alliances with progressives in other parties, as the next election was almost certainly going to end with a coalition government.

She said: “We need to think differently about water consumption and stop using drinking water to flush our toilets, while rainwater goes into the sewage system.

“This will mean re-engineering our streets and homes to better capture water.”

Former first minister Mark Drakeford said winning for working people can only be done through struggle and “we should fight for devolution of the crown estates, which would help us with our plans for renewable energy from the sea.”

Morning Star Wales reporter David Nicholson told the fringe that the paper was organising an all-Wales conference on February 15 2026, to bring together progressive forces from across political parties and the trade union movement.

“The conference will also include activists from the peace and environmental movements as well as anti-racist campaigners to help develop progressive policies that will help combat the Reform  party by giving voters a genuine left alternative,” Mr Nicholson said.
