Libya: Proposals for government of unity unveiled by UN envoy

THE UN envoy for Libya announced proposals for a national unity government on Thursday night.

Bernardino Leon told a news conference the candidates for the national unity administration had been picked.

Negotiators who attended the peace talks representing the rival governments approved the nominations, but Libya’s two rival parliaments in Tripoli and Tobruk must now ratify the deal.

Both factions claim legitimacy, but the US and EU nations back the regime in Tobruk, in the country’s east, rather than the one in Tripoli.

However, Mr Leon named a member of the Tobruk parliament, Fayez Sarraj, as prime minister. Ironically, Mr Farraj purports to represent Tripoli in the Tobruk parliament.

“We believe this list can work,” the UN envoy said.

Libya has lacked a single government since the country was devastated by the Nato-led campaign that overthrew Colonel Muammar Gadaffi.
