SOUTH AFRICA: Authorities today closed the busiest border crossing with Mozambique.

The move came after protests led to violent clashes in several cities following last month’s disputed presidential election, won by the country’s ruling Frelimo party.

The South African border agency said: “Due to security incidents and in the interest of public safety, the port has been temporarily closed until further notice.”

LEBANON: The Lebanese Labour Minister Moustafa Bayram said today that his country was filing a complaint against Israel at the United Nations International Labour Organisation over the string of deadly attacks involving exploding pagers, saying workers were among those killed and injured.

The explosions in mid-September killed at least 37 people, including two children and wounded more than 3,000.

GREECE: Authorities have recovered the bodies of four people from the sea just off the coast of the eastern Aegean island of Rhodes, while another 25 people have been found alive on land after a migrant smuggler allegedly forced his passengers overboard while transferring them from Turkey to Greece, the coast guard said today.

The bodies of three men and one woman were recovered near the coast on the southern tip of Rhodes early today, the coast guard said. 

IRELAND: The Irish government accepted the appointment of a full Palestinian ambassador for the first time on Tuesday.

This comes after Dublin said in May of this year that it was formally recognising the state of Palestine.
