Boxing: Surgery needed for Colon after brain injury

Promising welterweight boxer Prichard Colon was left in a coma yesterday following surgery to fix a bleed on the brain suffered during his loss to Terrel Williams on Saturday night.

The 23-year-old Puerto Rican, who was fighting on the undercard of Lamont Peterson’s majority decision victory over Felix Diaz Jnr, was dropped twice by Williams and lost via a ninth-round disqualification.

Colon was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital in north Virginia, US, having reportedly experienced vomiting and dizziness in his dressing room and his brother Ricardo confirmed that he had undergone surgery.

The boxer’s representative Alan Obrador also released a statement.

He said: “I know you’re concerned about the health of Prichard. I have just spoken with his mother and he is recovering after bleeding on the left side of his brain.

“We will keep you informed of any developments in this way. We ask for prayers for the speedy recovery of Prichard.”
