INTERNATIONALLY renowned poet Simon Armitage threw his weight yesterday behind a campaign to save public libraries in West Yorkshire.
The Oxford and Sheffield universities professor sent a message of support to campaigners fighting libraries closures at Kirklees.
The council is planning to shut most of its libraries or hand them over to unpaid volunteers, despite sitting on reserves of £100 million.
Prof Armitage said: “As well as providing a vital resource and an essential service, offering access to the world through reading and the internet, they are part of every community’s identity and an important cultural and democratic presence in our society.
“Dismantling the library system would represent a permanent break with a long and distinguished tradition.”
A protest organised by Unite Community will take place at 9am tomorrow outside Huddersfield Town Hall, where the council’s scrutiny committee will discuss the closures.
