Council workers have not received pension payments for six months due to IT issue

LOCAL government workers have not received their pension payments for six months due to IT problems, a union and council have said.

The delays at West Midlands Pension Fund are causing “significant hardship and stress” with thousands yet to receive their benefits, Sandwell Council and the local Unison branch said.

The pension fund is part of the Local Government Pension Scheme and works in partnership with the seven West Midlands Metropolitan District Councils.

Unison and the council said they understood a new system can bring problems, which take time to resolve, but added the 12-month anniversary of the new system had been passed.

In a letter to the Wolverhampton-based fund, they said: “Our employees are not receiving the experience or necessary information they need to be making such a significant financial decision.

“More importantly staff are waiting unreasonable timescales to receive their pension payments, causing significant hardship and stress.”

The fund was contacted for comment.
