HOUSE of Commons speaker John Bercow yesterday rubbished Tory suggestions that the Lords had sparked a “constitutional crisis” by blocking cuts to tax credits.
Jacob Rees-Mogg was among Tory MPs who claimed the vote challenged the supremacy of the House of Commons and demanded that the Speaker take action.
But Mr Bercow gave their claims short shrift, telling them bluntly: “There has been no procedural impropriety.
“Whether people like what happened last night, on the substance of the issue or in terms of their views on constitutionality, is a matter for each and every one of them.”
The exchange came as David Cameron plotted his revenge on the Lords.
He was set to launch a “rapid review” of the role of peers yesterday afternoon but pushed the announcement back to buy more time to cobble together a coherent policy.
