PRIVATE rents in London have soared by more than a fifth since 2010, official stats showed yesterday.
The 20.9 per cent rise was the highest of any English region and almost double the national average of 12.5 per cent, the Office for National Statistics figures showed.
In the same period, average household income has risen only by 4 per cent.
Housing charity Shelter chief executive Campbell Robb said millions are struggling to survive under the “relentless” rent rises.
Labour’s shadow housing minister Teresa Pearce added: “For private renters, the last five years under the Tories have been five years of failure, with no proper action on soaring rents and poor conditions.”
