Jelly workers strike over 13% real terms pay cut

JELLY factory workers went on strike today over real-terms pay cuts amounting to a 13 per cent loss.

Manufacturer PB Leiner, an international manufacturer of gelatins used in food, beverages and pharmaceutical products, will be further shaken tomorrow as some 50 GMB members prepare to walk out from its site in Pontypridd, south Wales.

The union said they have seen a 6 per cent real terms cut in their wages this year, following a 7 per cent cut the year before.

GMB regional officer Gareth Morgans said: “These below-inflation pay awards are driving our members into poverty.

“We’re hopeful the company will come to their senses and get back round the table.

“If not we’ll be escalating the action with further strike dates. Have no doubt, GMB will stand by our members throughout this.”

A company spokeswoman said it is going through a “challenging global economic situation” which means it “is not in the position to meet the demand of the union.”
