MP subject to vile abuse for pointing out sexism

A LABOUR MP was subjected to a barrage of online abuse and violent threats yesterday after she opposed a parliamentary debate on International Men’s Day.

Jess Phillips received disturbing messages, including threats of rape and mutilation, after she dared to challenge a Conservative MP on the backbench business committee.

Ms Phillips, who represents Birmingham Yardley, told the board: “As the only woman on this committee, it seems like every day to me is International Men’s Day.

“When I’ve got parity, when women in these buildings have parity, you can have your debate.

“And that will take an awfully long time.”

MPs across the parties stood with her, including Labour backbencher Yvette Cooper, who tweeted: “Vile threats against one of best MPs. Abuse & threats poison the internet. We can’t let them. #IStandWithJessPhillips.”
