A FORMER mining community in Yorkshire has suffered an economic body blow with the transfer of more than 700 jobs from the town.
Castleford in West Yorkshire is set to lose its biggest employer after textile firm Burberry announced plans to move its operation to Leeds.
The town was once surrounded by coalmines, but they were axed in the Tory onslaught on the industry following the 1984-5 strike against pit closures.
Burberry, which employs 750 people in the town, says it will transfer the workforce to the new plant in Leeds, where it is opening a £50 million plant.
General union GMB regional secretary Tim Roache said: “‘This is bittersweet news.
“GMB welcomes Burberry committing its future to Yorkshire by announcing this relocation to Leeds.
“However, this will be a major blow to the town of Castleford and surrounding areas, as Burberry has been the largest employer linked with the town for over 100 years.”
