Speech study reveals Beast of Bolsover Dennis Skinner’s brave Westminster boast

DENNIS SKINNER has been told to “shut up” more than any other MP in the history of Parliament, researchers revealed yesterday.

The latest accolade for the “Beast of Bolsover” was discovered by historians studying 7.6 million Parliamentary speeches made between 1803 and 2005.

Political anoraks can now pore over 1.6 billion words spoken in Westminster that have been compiled on a new website.

But for the rest of us, the Glasgow University academics behind the site have developed more interesting ways to dig into the information.

The website breaks down the words and terms most used by individual politicians.

It reveals “strike” was among Margaret Thatcher’s most-used words, while “troop” was forever on the tip of Tony Blair’s tongue.

Jeremy Corbyn comes a surprise ninth place in the list of MPs who have mentioned the US most in Parliament.

Away from politics, “sex” gets 23,000 mentions and is twice as popular as “cigarettes” at 10,556.
