Driving test hours overhaul ‘putting road users at risk’

ROAD safety will be risked by letting new drivers sit their tests in the dark, instructors have warned as they prepare for strike action.

Public-sector union PCS said that the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) plan to increase the number of tests allowed per day could end up breaching the legal requirement for tests to be conducted in “good daylight.”

In a ballot that closed yesterday, 91.5 per cent of DVSA staff voted to strike over the issue.

Reps are calling on the agency to commission new research on test times, including their physical and psychological effects and their impact on safety.

They also want a full staffing review and say that bosses have admitted they are 350 posts short.

“These plans show a blatant disregard for road safety and we’re appalled that DVSA is pressing ahead instead of negotiating with us,” said PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka.
