A PETITION to make lying in Parliament a thing of the past reached over 107,000 signatures yesterday.
The campaign — inspired by the upcoming 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta — was launched by comedian Jolyon Rubinstein.
“If I were to lie in a court of law, I would go to jail. But it’s entirely legal for an MP to lie to Parliament. Doesn’t sound right, does it?” reads Mr Rubinstein’s introduction to the petition.
He adds that the petition does not aim to make laws on lying in Parliament, but rather “to start a debate about the importance of the truth in politics.”
A short video for the Make Lying in Parliament History campaign shows Mr Rubinstein, fellow actors Russell Brand, Jack Whitehall, Oona Chaplin and musician Professor Green taking a stand against broken promises.
“Lies” listed include the infamous Lib Dem tuition fees freeze promise and David Cameron’s motto: “We are all in this together.”
