Workers at a world-famous factory are this week continuing strike action over an attack on working conditions.

The factory at Gateshead in north-east England manufactures the expensive Barbour jackets — a favourite of the wealthy.

Sixty full-time workers are members of Unite but the firm also employs temporary staff on worse pay and conditions.

Unite says management is attempting to reduce the full-timers’ working conditions, axing unsocial hours payments and extending shifts to 11pm, ignoring the effect on workers with care responsibilities.

Six days of strike action began on Thursday last week and continue this week.

They say management is axing unsocial hours payments and extending shifts until 11pm.

They accused the company of “hypocrisy” because of its mission statement based on “respect and family values.”

Bosses responded to the action by cruelly banning strikers from the firm’s annual Christmas party on Friday.

Strikes are taking place today and on Monday and Tuesday January 5 and 6.
