Ruling BJP chief acquitted of three murder charges

The head of India’s ruling Hindu chauvinist party BJP was acquitted of three murder charges yesterday in a trial that undermined the government’s promise of a new era of clean politics.

Amit Shah, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s closest aide, was cleared of ordering police to kill gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife and his friend, when he served as home minister under Mr Modi in Gujarat state.

He was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Mr Shah was promoted to BJP president in July as he awaited trial.

Rubabuddin Sheikh, the brother of one of the victims, said his family would challenge the ruling.

“Amit Shah has wrongly been protected and we will challenge the order in the high court,” he said.

India’s Central Bureau of Investigation had accused Mr Shah of running an extortion racket with police officers and Mr Sheikh while holding the top law-and-order job in Gujarat.
