18-year-old student to be youngest candidate

A politics student could become the country’s youngest MP after he was selected yesterday to contest a seat for Labour in next year’s general election.

Eighteen-year-old Solomon Curtis will stand as Labour’s candidate for the rural Wealden seat in East Sussex.

Mr Curtis revealed that studying Labour’s 1945 general election victory and Clem Attlee’s government has inspired his campaign.

He said: “The British Political History course has been really influential in shaping my campaign.

“With the 2015 election 70 years on from the Attlee government of 1945, which led to the creation of the NHS, I am keener than ever to recapture the mood of optimism, hope and aspiration.”

Mr Curtis is unlikely to win, as the Wealden seat had a Tory majority of over 17,000 at the 2010 general election.
