Lambeth College lecturers escalate walkouts

LECTURERS at Lambeth College are set to walk out on strike for 48 hours today in protest against new contracts which worsen working conditions.

University and College Union (UCU) members are picketing the college’s Clapham, Brixton and Vauxhall sites.

The determined lecturers took six days of strike action in December and are poised for a three-day strike next week, followed by indefinite strike action from Monday January 19.

Staff will be on the picket lines at the Clapham, Brixton and Vauxhall sites from 7am.

The row centres on new contracts introduced by the college without consulting the union.

Management has proposed exempting from the contract staff employed before April last year, but the union says this would create a two-tier workforce.

UCU regional official Una O’Brien said: “The college needs to come back to the table and make a real effort to negotiate properly with us. The clock is ticking towards indefinite strike action.”
