Buses to be patchy during 1-day strike

BUS services across London will be “patchy” during a one-day strike by thousands of workers in a row about pay, Transport for London warned yesterday.

Members of transport union Unite at 18 companies will walk out on Tuesday January 13 as part of a long-running campaign for a single agreement covering their pay, terms and conditions.

Unite said that up to 27,000 drivers and other workers would take industrial action, hitting routes across Greater London.

In contrast to Tube drivers there is no collective pay deal for bus drivers, with wages negotiated on a company-by-company basis.

More than 80 different pay rates cover drivers doing the same job, leading to differences in hourly rates of over £3.

“If the strike takes place, services across London will be patchy and I urge customers to please check our website for the latest news,” said Transport for London surface transport managing director Leon Daniels.
